Books have been said on this topic, and the controversy and arguments about where the "hot" slots are installed in a casino are still ongoing – more than sixty yrs after slot machines were first added to the gaming floor in the casinos.
The standard rule is that the most favorable one armed bandits were located just inside the door of the casino; so that casino fanatics passing by would be able to see jackpot winners and be enthralled to come inside … play. Our reasoning is that this is no longer true.
Practically all of the mega casinos presently are enormous complexes and now you can’t see inside from the sidewalk, so there is no longer a reason to have the ‘loose’ slot machines close-by any of the doors.
Another classic rule is that loose slot machine games are placed on the major aisles inside the casinos, again so that more fun seekers could see winning jackpots and be inspired to play. However, we find that this also is no longer a universal rule.
What casinos found over the years is that people walking down the busy aisles were frequently on the way to somewhere else. If they played one armed bandits at all, they would simply put in their loose change because they happened to be walking by. Win or lose, they would very often not stop to keep playing. And the very last thing a casino wants is for someone to win a jackpot by playing only a few coins and then not stay to put it all back in!
Nowadays, casinos are constantly changing their philosophy about where to place the loose one armed bandits.
